FAITH | LOVE | COMMUNITY
Our Story
After living in the grips of addiction for over 25 years, a member of our community began to attend a faith-based recovery group that met weekly. This individual battled substance abuse and mental illness from the time he was twelve years old. He tried multiple inpatient programs, outpatient programs, medication assisted treatment, psychiatric medicine, and therapy all to no avail. In 2017 he began to attend a program called Recovery at Hillsville, a faith-based recovery meeting where the staff and volunteers treated him with compassion and provided a loving environment in which he learned how to love himself and heal from the traumas that were at the root of his substance abuse. Not only did this program have an impact on his life specifically, but also the lives of his family as relationships that had become estranged over the years began to experience restoration and healing. Witnessing the outcome of his experience led us to believe that building a program that holistically addresses the recovery journey would have a significant positive impact on those fighting similar battles throughout our community.

This corporation came to be over a period of time as members of the community began to notice the devastating effects of substance use and other mental health issues on our loved ones, friends, and neighbors and decided it was time to do something to bring the opportunity for healing to these individuals and families. Grace, Grit, and Gratitude officially became incorporated by the Commonwealth of Virginia on July 11, 2024. Many of the staff and volunteers who will oversee and conduct the activities of this
corporation have lived experience with substance use and mental health issues that equip them to use their experience to walk alongside of program participants meeting them where they are with empathy and compassion as we provide education and recovery services from a faith-based perspective.
As other members of the community recognized this problem gripping our community, many came together to discuss ways that we could combat this issue in an effort to bring healing not only to the individuals struggling with substance use, but also to the children and families affected by no fault of their own. The name "Grace, Grit, and Gratitude Inc," is a reference to key elements of the recovery journey. We believe that grace is a key component of recovery as we are dependent upon the grace of God and our fellow man to strengthen us throughout the recovery journey. Grit quite simply refers to the dedication and hard work that it takes on the part of each individual to be successful in recovery. We find that once we have begun to recover holistically and see hope in our lives that an attitude of gratitude will form and guide us on our journey.
Our mission is to serve in Carroll County and other surrounding counties in Southwest Virginia. We believe and have seen evidence in the lives of staff and volunteers that our mission can be accomplished through various program activities that are in place to help foster recovery holistically on the physical, mental, and spiritual level.

"After 26 years actively abusing substances, I finally reached a stage of brokenness that actually led to healing and restoration in my life. Since beginning my own personal recovery journey in 2016, I have had the privilege of working with individuals and families in recovery full time since 2018. Hopelessness was one of the greatest obstacles to sustained recovery that I faced. Truly believing there is no way out, that change is not possible, that I really am as worthless as I feel, both physically and mentally, all of these things I experienced. Yet as I became a part of a recovery community and took my first steps into personal recovery including meetings, therapy, and spiritual relationship with a loving God, the hopelessness began to fade and hope began to take root. As I sit here today recovery has brought more happiness, healing, and opportunity into my life than I ever imagined possible. The truly awesome part is that if it can happen to me, it can happen to you as well! We are compassion driven and will accept you exactly where you find yourself today, not where others believe you should be. Recovery looks different for most individuals, alas there is no magic pill or cookie-cutter pattern…but there is hope. Hope for healing, hope for restoration, hope for life!"
